t o u c h OF m a d n e s s
t o u c h OF m a d n e s s
i grew up frailer than most would know
with brittle hair and skin like snow
i'd lay, emprisioned, as a dove
who'd never felt an once of love
within my cage i'd often dream
of seeing sun and starlight's gleam
but then, one night, my bars did burn
and, running, took a hasty turn
away from what i'd always known
and towards a world with promise shown
although first timid as a mouse
i quickly loved the old doll house
with winding stair and windowpane
and labyrinth twisting like a game
of hide-and-seek for earth and sky
while light beat down so bright and high
but after years of solitude
i found one thing that did intrude
upon my blissful liveliness
and that was morbid lonliness
would no one come around to play
within this world i'd hidden away?
and so i found not merely toys
but real and darling girls and boys
to share my life of childish glee
and live for all eternity.
